 Botox is the brand name for a medication called onabotulinumtoxinA. It's one of the most popular cosmetic treatments in the world, and it's even used to treat some types of medical conditions. Botox injection into the bladder is a well-established treatment for overactive bladder and urgency incontinence (UI) — leaking urine due to a sudden, strong need to urinate. Although it's not approved or recommended as a first-line treatment for this condition, many people with overactive bladder who have tried other treatments without success have been helped by Botox.


Botox works by blocking the release of acetylcholine, a chemical that stimulates muscle contractions. This causes smooth muscles (such as those in the bladder) to relax. When injected into the bladder wall in small amounts, Botox temporarily weakens the detrusor muscle, which reduces involuntary contractions (called "detrusor overactivity"). This allows you to urinate more normally.
